Cat-Proof
Your Home
Cats
are curious and playful, especially with objects
that move or have a nice texture. Below are some
of the favorite hazards a cat may discover in your
home and some tips on preventing an injury or accident
in your home.
- Telephone
and electrical cords
- Toilet
paper and shower curtains
- A
smoldering cigarette
- Moving
records, tapes or discs
- Drapes,
blinds and curtains
- Jewelry
- Panty
hose and tights
- Plastic
bags or cellophane that hold tempting food, bones
or garbage
- Ribbons, thread,
yarn or rubber bands
- Plants
Below
are some of the ways that you can keep your cat
safe:
- Make
sure that all screens and windows are secure.
- Make
sure hazards that might be easily swallowed are
out of a cat's reach.
- Be
sure to close drawers, dishwasher, dryer and washing
machine doors when not in use.
- Remove
or cover any plants, electrical cords or breakable
glass objects.
- If
you have a small kitten, block off heating vents,
air returns or other openings where a kitten may
venture.
- Do
not leave lit candles unattended.
- Your
cat should wear a collar. Make sure it is the
breakaway style with an elastic piece to prevent
accidental choking.
- Keep clothes picked
up or in a closed laundry basket while your cat
is acclimating himself to your home. Cats will
instinctively eliminate on or in soft substrates.
