How do I choose a companion animal?

Considering adding an animal to the family? The Ozaukee Humane Society offers the following information to make your choice easier.

Examine your lifestyle
A busy family that is always on the go may be wise to avoid an energetic puppy or kitten that will require a lot of time for training and socialization. Try to match your lifestyle with the temperament of the animal. Remember, sometimes opposites attract. Busy people may do well with a match that is more sedate and used to the antics of a hectic household.

Get the whole family involved
Choosing a new companion can be very exciting. Start your selection process at home by polling family members. What do they want? Is it a bird, rabbit, dog or cat that they believe would make them happy? Narrow your selection by choosing physical characteristics that appeal to you. Consider size, coat length, sex, adult animal or puppy/kitten.

Learn all you can
Visit the library, read books on the type of animal you are interested in and attend seminars to learn how to prevent potential behavior problems. OHS and WHS offer animal behavior seminars on dogs, cats and rabbits. All seminars are held at the Wisconsin Humane Society, 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Be prepared for the new animal's arrival
Many items can be purchased at the Ozaukee Humane Society's Animal Antics store at the time adoption takes place or online so that you can get the items your animal will need. Such things might include safe toys, food and water dishes, leashes, crates and litter boxes.

Ask questions
When interacting with your potential new companion, ask about his or her behavior. An animal's temperament is the most important factor in a successful adoption. OHS evaluates animals prior to adoption. Adoption Counselors are happy to answer your questions.

Adopt from an animal shelter
Most shelters have a large selection of mixed breed and purebred animals of all ages. Plan to make several visits to find the type of animal you want.

OHS offers a wealth of resources. Services include information on how to choose an animal, adoption counseling, behavior seminars, low cost training classes and adoption follow-up support.
