Fireworks
Frighten Fido and Fluffy
GRAFTON,
Wis. – Fireworks, community parades, picnics
and plenty of mosquitoes are a part of many Fourth
of July festivities. As Wisconsinites celebrate
the anniversary of America 's independence, the
Ozaukee Humane Society would like to remind companion
animal guardians of several tips to help keep Fido
and Fluffy safe, including:
·
People who attend fireworks displays
typically enjoy the loud, sudden noises and bright
colors associated
with the display. However, most animals do not enjoy
the noises and brightness and in fact are frightened
by them. It is recommended to leave Fido and Fluffy
at home.
·
Many animals who hear loud noises run
away and hide. Even leashed dogs can become frightened
and break away from their family. Make sure your
companion animals have identification on their collars.
Name and license tags as well as microchips allow
people to return a stray animal to the guardian.
·
The Ozaukee Humane Society recommends
that companion animals be kept safely indoors in
familiar and comfortable surroundings during the
fireworks display. Never leave companion animals
outside and unattended as they may become frightened,
injure themselves or break loose and run away.
·
If your furry friend is seriously distressed
by loud noises such as the rumble of motorcycles
or thunder, talk with your veterinarian prior to
July 4. He or she can provide recommendations about
how to reduce your animal's fear and anxiety during
the fireworks display.
·
NEVER leave your companion animal in
a car – it can quickly heat up to fatal temperatures.
Your companion animal may also become destructive
when he or she is frightened by loud noises.
