More Fleas for Fluffy
GRAFTON,
Wis. – Summer
has finally arrived in Wisconsin . This is the time
of year many guardians learn Fluffy or Fido has
a bad case of the ticks and fleas. The Ozaukee Humane
Society offers these tips to protect yourself and
your furry friend from these small parasites:
•
Treat your companion animal with a spot application
product once every month. Always consult your veterinarian
before applying an over-the-counter product to your
animal, especially cats; some products contain permethrins,
which can be deadly to your cat.
•
Always keep your cat indoors. This tip applies year
round. Cats kept indoors not only keep away from
parasites, but also avoid danger posed by larger
predators, cars and even people.
•
Dogs should be kept away from tall grass and wooded
areas, where fleas and ticks thrive. If your lawn
is kept short the flea larvae will die in the sun.
•
Vacuum your home often (including furniture) – even
before you know you have a flea problem. Vacuuming
is a good way to remove fleas in all stages of development.
If you know you have a problem, change the vacuum
bag after each use.
•
Remove all ticks from your companion animal as soon
as you find them. Wear rubber gloves and use tweezers
to remove the tick, which helps to prevent disease
transmission. Be sure and remove the entire tick;
any part that is left behind could cause an infection.
Apply antiseptic to the area once the tick has been
removed. It is also recommended that you take your
animal to the veterinarian.
